Welcome back to Term 2.
A big thank you to those students who joined us in the holidays for the Anzac Day March. The children represented their school well and it was wonderful to see students participate so respectfully on the day. Thank you to Mrs Campbell who joined us and also to Rick Singh who very generously donated juices for all of the students at the completion of the march.
In the holidays some small improvements and changes took place at the school. New basketball back boards were installed on the courts kindly purchased by our Community Council. A huge thank you to Jason and Jack Beavan for putting them up – they look great and the kids have definitely been practicing their shots! The stairs from the 4/5/6 classroom into the staffroom were removed to give some much needed space in the staffroom and another work area for staff to utilize. A big clean up also took place to condense teacher resources, teaching materials, games, text books etc and ensure that we are using every available space to work more effectively. We have received quotes to install new LED battons in classrooms and work areas to not only phase out fluorescent lights in the school but to reduce our electricity bills as part of a government incentive.
St Joseph’s is celebrating Catholic Schools Week this week – it was wonderful to see parents join us for Mass today and to come into the classrooms for our Learning showcase. Our students are extremely dedicated to their learning, so for them to be able to share with you their achievements, progress and samples of work and activities was fantastic.
Newsletters will be published fortnightly on the Tuesday of even weeks of term. There are many ways that St Joseph’s informs our families about all that is happening in the school. It is important that all families are reading the newsletter, checking their emails, compass app and facebook to keep up to date. With so many ways to communicate now I am confident that all families are being kept in the loop of what is happening at St Joseph’s.
Have a great week

Principal

Welcome to Term 2! I hope you had a restful break.
Professional Development
Last Monday staff from St Joseph’s Adelong, St Mary’s Batlow, St Patrick’s Gundagai and McAuley Catholic College, gathered at McAuley Catholic school to participate in our annual Staff Spirituality Day.
The theme for the day was ‘Walking Together’, where we unpacked the piece of scripture ‘The Walk to Emmaus’ - Luke 24:13-35. We looked at why synodality is important to the evangelising mission of the Church and how people are invited to proclaim and witness the Gospel.
Catholic Schools Week
This week is Catholic Schools Week across our diocese. Catholic Schools Week is about recognising and celebrating the excellence of Catholic schools. Each year, Catholic schools observe the celebration through a variety of activities, emphasising the importance of Catholic education
It was lovely celebrating Catholic Schools Week today with Mass and our Learning Showcase.
Children’s Mass
The school will present Mass on Sunday 7th May. We would love as many families as possible to come and share this Parish Mass. If you are able to attend, and would like your child to participate, please email me so that I can distribute the Readings.

Altar Serving Training
Please contact me if you would like your child to learn how to altar serve at Mass. Fr Joe will train the children in the upcoming weeks during school time.

painting poppies in remembrance for ANZAC day, and we began our
gymnastics lessons this week for sport, it was lots of fun.
School fees for Term 2 will be emailed out to parents shortly. For families that do not schedule regular payments for fees, please ensure that all outstanding fees are paid before the new fee statements are sent out. BPay is our preferred method for payment of school fees. Please make an appointment to see Mrs Beavan if you need to discuss your fee payments.
You will find this Bpay biller code and reference on your statement or please contact the office if you have any questions.
We thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
You may have noticed that the compass kiosk from the office foyer has been removed. If you need to sign your child in or out of school please notify the office staff and they will register their departure/arrival on compass. Absences need to be logged via compass and you have 7 school days to enter the absence before it is unexplained.
All permissions/consent for events – excursions, sporting carnivals etc are through compass. We are no longer sending home paper notes, your permission is now online. If anyone has trouble with accessing compass, please notify office staff and they will be more than happy to help you out.
Please find the lunch order menu for Mondays from the Gold Rush Cafe.
In weeks 5, 8 and 10 the only items that can be ordered are Pizzas. Please note these are the only times that pizza will be available.
If your child wishes to order please place your child’s name, class, order and correct money in an envelope on Monday mornings.
Thank you to all parents who completed the uniform survey that was sent to all families during the Easter break. If you did not receive the survey please let the school know as the survey will be closed at the end of the week. Staff and students from Kindergarten to Yr 3
have been surveyed and students from Yr 4-6 will complete their survey online this week. Whilst we are reviewing the uniform policy please note that the current policy is still in place. Winter uniform is now being worn including ties–please make sure that hair longer than shoulder length is tied back for both boys and girls, and black school shoes/boots with the winter uniform.
Excursion - The Twits - Wagga Civic Theatre
K-6 will go on an excursion to the Wagga Civic Theatre on Friday 19th May to see The Twits live stage show at 10am. Children will travel over by bus.
The cost of this excursion will be $40.00 per student and event and payment details will be sent out as soon as possible.
Semester One reports will be distributed to parents towards the end of Term 2.
Parent/Teacher interviews will be held in Wk 10.
Please see correspondence from CE regarding general comments.
Catholic Education Canberra-Goulburn (CECG) has communicated to schools regarding reporting to parents/guardians. CE has advised schools that general comments will not be required on Semester 1, 2023 reports, but to prioritise Parent/Teacher Conferences for every family. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, their strengths, challenges and future areas of focus. A Semester Report will still be sent home as in previous Semesters providing A-E grading and attendance information. CE has advised schools that Semester 2, 2023 reports will require a general comment for all children. This general comment will provide a summative comment for the year, areas of achievement and areas to focus on for the following year. A-E grading and attendance information will remain as normal. We would encourage all parents/guardians to engage regularly with their child/ren’s learning, connecting with their class teacher/s regularly to discuss learning progress.
Athletics Carnival - Tuesday 16th May - Tumut Bull Paddock.
Students will come to school and travel to Tumut by bus with Goode's Coaches and return in time for normal pick up and bus times.
If anyone is available to help with time keeping etc please let us know.
NOTE: If the weather does not permit we have a back up date of Tuedsay 23rd May.
Rugby Gala Day - Wagga & Mortimer Shield - Gundagai
Rugby Gala Day - Thursday 4th May - Wagga
Students in the Yr 3/4 team who qualified in Tumut will travel to Wagga to participate in the Rugby day.
Mortimer Shield - Tuesday 9th May - Gundagai
An expression of interest has been sent out via Compass to students in Yr 5/6. The location of the event has been changed to Owen Vincent Oval, Gundagai.
For both events parents will need to transport their child and a teacher from St Joseph's will be in attendance.
On Saturday Culley was asked to say a passage about the latest addition to the Snowy valleys sculpture trail. This sculpture is located in the grounds of the Adelong S and C club.
Cycle 90 lingering memory number 7 was produced by a Japanese artist for the sculpture trail.
Culley was only given 10 minutes to read through the blurb that the artist had written. The artist gave his speech in Japanese and Culley then read the speech in English.
Culley was lucky enough to be given this wonderful opportunity and to have the chance to meet and talk with the artist. Culley has said that he was a lovely person.
Counsellor James Hayes was present for the unveiling of the new sculpture and has communicated with the school the remarkable job that Culley did and how he was extremely impressed with how Culley spoke.
It is fantastic to hear wonderful stories about our leaders out in the wider community. Well done Culley – an excellent effort.
Our next community council meeting will be held on Wednesday 17th May 2023 at 6pm.
