Welcome to Week 4! It is a little scary that we have already nearly completed four weeks of the school year already.
A huge thank you to all parents who helped out with the Yavenvale Bull sale yesterday. To our wonderful families that baked, made salads, cooked the bbq, drove all the goodies out and helped out on the day – your help is very much appreciated.
A gentle reminder to families who wish take up the fee remission offer from CE for 12 months, could you please make contact with me by tomorrow. Attached is the note that went out last week for your reference that contains the information about how to determine if you are eligible.
For those who are new to school or may be unfamiliar with the routine when you are picking your child up before the end of the day – perhaps for an appointment please come to the office and sign your child out. Office staff will then go and collect your child, this ensures minimal disruption for the class. Also in regards to absences, classroom rolls are legal requirements and staff need to follow strict guidelines with these. If your child is away a note to the class teacher OR an email to your class teacher or office OR a phone call may be made to the school that tells of your child’s absence. SZapp also has a great tool where you can fill in an absence note. Please make sure that it contains the date your child was away and the reason why they are away. If communication is not received within 7 school days your child’s absence will be marked as unexplained. For those children who are away from school for regular medical appointments or therapist sessions, if you can please contact your child’s teacher with a timetable or schedule of the visits that will happen and how often your child receives such therapy. Whilst we understand that absences are sometimes unavoidable we ask that you be mindful of how much time your child is away from school and the direct impact that this has on their learning.
Next week we welcome two new staff members to the St Joseph’s team which we are very excited about. Mrs Lucinda Clay is the schools new Student Welfare Office (chaplain) who comes with a wealth of experience in this area. Lucinda will work one day a week and at this stage it will be on a Monday. We also welcome Madeleine Jesperson who also comes with great expertise and qualifications in the education sector and a wealth of experience with working with children. Madeline will be mainly working in the 2/3/4 classroom and will work on a Monday and a Friday. We know that they will both be great additions to the St Joseph’s team.
Have a great week,
Kind Regards,
Kirsty Beavan

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities or doing kind deeds for others, especially those less fortunate.
On Tuesday 25th February every class will celebrate Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes prior to recess. If your child has any special dietary needs please contact Mrs Murray.
On Wednesday 26th February Mass will be held in St James Church to mark Ash Wednesday. All families and parishioners are welcome to join us.
The sign of the cross, made with ash from the burnt palms from Palm Sunday, is a reminder for us to think about the choices we are making during Lent. We are encouraged to turn away from sin and to follow Jesus. When Father marks the cross on our forehead he either says “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return,” or “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”.

Community Council AGM
The AGM for our community council will be held next Wednesday 26 February at 6pm, followed by the first general meeting for the year.
The process for electing to the Community Council is that parents nominate to the Council and have another community member to second your nomination. If elected to the council it is then voted on by the executive as to who will hold the various positions.
All of these processes are set out in the Schools Constitution for the Community Council.
All positions will be declared open at the commencement of the meeting. Whilst being a member of the community council is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in your child’s school it is a commitment to be involved and attend meetings and events. In the constitution it does state that being absent from 3 consecutive meetings will see your position revoked.
Please have a look at the roles and what is involved. It is good to note that whilst executive will have specific roles community council members will be involved in all community council events and to take an active role as a valued member of the team!
