Happy Week 3. It is an exciting time at the moment with the Olympics taking place in Tokyo. I love watching our Aussie athletes do so well. We look forward to our Green and Gold day tomorrow to show our support to these dedicated and amazing athletes.
I have been inspired this week by an athlete by the name of Ivan Fernandez Anaya competing in Navarra Spain (back in 2012). He was about to finish a cross country race when he saw Abel Mutai, a Kenyan athlete who’d been in the lead, begin to slow down as he approached the finish line. Abel did not speak Spanish so he got confused by the signs and thought he had already won. Ivan saw what was happening and could have easily dashed past his opponent to win the race himself. Instead, he slowed his own pace and pointed Abel towards the real finish line so he could win. This athlete didn’t hesitate to do the right thing, proving that being a good sport is still one of the most important aspects of sports. When asked by a journalist why he didn’t take the opportunity to win the race, his answer was amazing.
“My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life.” He was reminded that he was only seconds away from winning the race. Ivan’s reply was “But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of that medal? What would my mum think of that?
What a beautiful story of true sportsmanship, I love this story and that he was thinking about his mum!!!
Have a great week
Kirsty Beavan
Principal
It has been fantastic to see the wonderful learning that is occurring in Religion lessons across our school. The teachers are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm and professionalism in writing their own units of work based on the Brisbane Curriculum and incorporating the Core Scripture for each unit. The Inquiry Units allow for Religion to be integrated with other key learning areas such as history, art, music and geography.
In Kindergarten and Year One, the children are investigating the wonder and awe of Creation. They selected an object or view that shows God’s creation, and are taking a weekly photo of the object. The children will then create a timelapse video to see the changes that occur with the object and how the weather pattern change over time. The children reflected on the scripture: ‘And God saw that it was good’ and created some wonderful artwork to illustrate their understandings.
Staff are undertaking a range of Professional Development in Religious Education at the moment. After school today, staff will complete a two hour Zoom entitled ‘Prophets and Prophesy’ led by Andrea Muller. We also have enrolled in another unit later in the term based on Assessment.
Congratulations to Miss Braun, Mrs Dean and Mrs Beavan who have enrolled in the Australian Catholic University to further their knowledge and skills in Religious Education. They are completing a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education, which can take up to four years to complete all the course work.
During their study they will look at Contemporary Models of Evangelisation in Catholic Schools and the Church and creating centres of evangelisation. They will participate in retreats and faith formation activities as well as formation for ministry and mission outreach. The staff will develop new skills and understandings that they can share with the staff, and continue to develop the faith formation and religious knowledge at St Joseph’s.
Their first University assignment is due this weekend – so we wish them all the best as they continue their studies.
St Vincent DePaul
The St Vincent DePaul Society of Tumut sent out a Thank You plaque to our school for the donations of food, clothing and money received in the Winter Woollies Appeal. The Vinnies staff were extremely grateful to the students and families for the generous donations that will help many families in our local community.
School Mass
The school is rostered to present Mass on Sunday 15th August. I invite as many families as possible to join us for this Children’s Mass. It is always a beautiful celebration and the children participate so reverently and confidently.
If you would like your child to participate in the Mass please email me: elizabeth.murray @cg.catholic.edu.au and I will send home a reading for you to practise.
It would be lovely to have as many St Joseph families as possible join us for this Parish Mass.
